Mould is one of those problems that seems to vanish with a good scrub — only to reappear on the same wall a few weeks later. That's because wiping away visible mould only treats the symptom. Mould is a living organism, and like any organism, it needs food and water to survive. In most homes, the "food" (dust, skin cells, wood, drywall, grout) is impossible to eliminate entirely, which means the real key to removing mould permanently is cutting off its water supply.

What Causes Mould in the Home
Mould spores are naturally present in almost all indoor and outdoor air. They only become a problem when they land on a damp surface and start to colonise it. It's worth being accurate here rather than alarmist. The WHO's guidelines on dampness and mould conclude that persistently damp or mouldy indoor environments are linked to an increased risk of respiratory symptoms, though individual reactions vary considerably from person to person, and not everyone exposed to mould will experience symptoms.

How to Remove Mould From Different Surfaces

Hard, non-porous surfaces (tiles, glass, sealed grout, glazed surfaces)

Grout and bathroom sealant
Grout is porous, so mould can sit below the surface. A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, or a specialist grout cleaner, applied with an old toothbrush works well for regular maintenance. Badly affected silicone sealant around baths and showers is often easier to strip out and replace than to fully clean.
Painted drywall and plaster (small areas, under roughly 1m²)
Wipe down with a detergent solution and allow to dry fully. Small surface mould on painted walls can usually be handled as a DIY job.
Porous materials (carpet, ceiling tiles, upholstered furniture, drywall with heavy or deep staining)
These often cannot be fully cleaned once mould has established itself, because the growth extends into the material itself. The EPA advises that badly contaminated porous materials generally need to be removed and replaced rather than cleaned.
Large areas
If mould covers more than about 1 square metre, or you suspect it's linked to a hidden leak or rising damp, it's worth bringing in a professional. Large-scale mould problems are frequently a symptom of a structural or plumbing issue that needs to be fixed before cleaning will have any lasting effect.
The Part Most People Skip: Preventing Mould From Coming Back

Most guidance, including from dehumidifier manufacturers and building science sources, points to keeping indoor relative humidity below roughly 50-60% to make conditions inhospitable for mould growth. A simple hygrometer (many dehumidifiers include one built in) lets you keep an eye on this rather than guessing.
This is where a dehumidifier earns its place as a genuinely useful long-term tool rather than a gadget. By actively pulling excess moisture out of the air, a dehumidifier addresses the root cause of most household mould rather than just the visible symptom — particularly in enclosed rooms, bathrooms without good ventilation, or homes prone to condensation in winter.
